BRAC Afghanistan as Support Organisation has signed an agreement on 28 th January 2007 with the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) to implement Rural Water Supply and Sanitation project in primarily 8 districts of Kabul and Badghis provinces. The Project will support the implementation of the Government of Afghanistan's Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Policy/ Strategy which emphasises basic water supply service for all, improved health through integration of health and hygiene education with water supply and sanitation, community cost sharing, ownership and management including operations and maintenance.
The main components of a scheme consist both the software and the hardware aspects which include development at the local level (establishment of Water Supply and Sanitation User Groups (WSUGs); capacity building, operation and maintenance systems, health and hygiene education, water supply facilities and sanitation including demonstration latrines and household's latrines.
Overall goal of WATSAN
To improve health by reducing infant and adult morbidity and mortality caused by preventable waterborne diseases by increasing access to safe and reliable water points and hygienic sanitation facilities.
Project Objectives
Improve the health of rural communities in Afghanistan by increasing awareness through integration of health and hygiene education with the provision of safe and sustainable water supply and sanitation services.
Strengthen and build the capacity of government (Centre and provincial) for sector development and that of NGOs, the private sector and the communities to scale up provision of sustainable water supply and sanitation facilities.
